Iyad Allawi, Iraq’s interim prime minister, on Monday praised Iraqis for defying the insurgents and flocking to the polls in large numbers, saying it had been a “great day and we should be proud to be Iraqis”.

The whole world had witnessed what the Iraqi people were capable of in demonstrating that the terrorists did not hold a magic formula, he said.
