Barclays executives prepared for a hard slog

A year ago, as the credit squeeze was just beginning to take hold, Barclays executives were cautiously optimistic that the crisis would blow over in the space of a few months.

On Thursday, as they re-ported a 33 per cent drop in pre-tax profits for the first half of the year, the bank’s top brass made it clear they were prepared for a long, hard slog.
