Robert Mapplethorpe's photograph of Patti Smith on the cover of her 1975 album Horses shows the singer staring at us aloofly but intensely, the very image of the defiant Romantic artist. She wears a white shirt and a black tie, with a black jacket slung over her shoulder, an androgynous look reprised at this concert, although now the effect makes her look ascetic and solemn, like someone worn down, yet given gravity by time.
