Spain’s Socialist government, yielding to intense pressure from electricity companies, local authorities and employees at risk of redundancy, on Thursday granted a four-year reprieve to the country’s oldest commercial nuclear power plant despite an election promise to start winding down the nuclear industry.

The decision was the latest sign that European countries are rethinking their generally anti-nuclear stance in the face of a deep economic crisis and demands for low-carbon energy production to arrest global warming.
