Brown damps election frenzy

Gordon Brown yesterday moved to cool expectations he is about to call a November election, amid a slump in Labour’s poll ratings and signs that Conservative plans to slash inheritance tax are winning support in marginal seats.

Although the prime minister’s allies stressed the decision on a snap election was “finely balanced”, there was a clear move to reduce the election momentum he has allowed to build up – the first sign he might be wavering.
