Toyota freezes pay and bonuses to stem losses

Toyota, the Japanese carmaker, froze pay and management bonuses at its UK operations on Wednesday and refused to rule out further measures to tackle the global downturn in demand.

The company also gave notice of a voluntary severance programme for staff at its two British plants, one at Burnaston near Derby and the other in Deeside in north Wales, where it employs 4,449 people.
