Police hold 200 over Moldova poll riot

Police and opposition protesters battled in Moldova on Wednesday in a clash that provoked heated exchanges between the tiny fomer Soviet republic and neighbouring Romania and prompted concern in Russia, the European Union and the US.

Wednesday’s violence in Chisinau, the capital, was triggered by Sunday’s parliamentary elections and followed even greater turmoil on Tuesday when demonstrators stormed parliament and the presidential palace.
