Conservative judge nominated to Supreme Court

President George W. Bush on Monday moved to mend the breach with his conservative base but risked a bitter partisan battle in the Senate by nominating Samuel Alito, a proven conservative, to the Supreme Court.

Mr Alito's record suggests he would move the court to the right on social issues such as abortion and affirmative action for minorities.
