US finally agrees to a 'global goal' to cut greenhouse gases

For the past 10 years, the US has turned up at inter-national meetings on climate change to say No.

White House officials have poured scorn on the Kyoto protocol agreed in 1997 to force cuts in greenhouse gas emissions. They have cast doubt on the science of climate change, stalled on a successor to Kyoto and in some cases watered down agreements calling for climate change action.
