Engineering chiefs take a leaf out of the private equity book

In his 20s, Christopher Miller was warned off by his father, an engineer, from a career in manufacturing. "Too difficult," he was told.

Having only partly taken his father's advice, Mr Miller, who trained as an accountant, is now chairman of Melrose, an engineering business specialising in "acting as the sickbay for unloved manufacturers", in the words of one of its shareholders.
