Surge in German consumer confidence

Germans have become less worried about unemployment than at any time in the past two years, triggering a surge in consumer confidence in Europe’s largest economy that could help the continent withstand a slowdown in global growth.

The sharp fall in unemployment fears, reported by the European Commission, highlighted the striking improvement in German labour market prospects in recent months, which contrasts with concerns about US jobless totals.
