The United States praised Pakistan on Thursday for holding an election that advanced the cause of democratic civilian government, but said it would be premature to assume the defeat of President Pervez Musharraf’s party meant that his days in power were numbered.
“We believe that in the long-run this makes Pakistan more stable and gives it more opportunities,” Richard Boucher, the top US official for south Asia, said in a reference to Monday’s parliamentary election.
