French fight EU trade offer to poor countries

France and some other European Union nations are fighting to dilute the free market access offered to developing countries by the European Commission as it negotiates the renewal of a special trade preference scheme.

Talks about the proposed "economic partnership agreements" (EPAs), which will replace existing trade privileges for a group of 79 countries from Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific (ACP), must conclude before the end of the year.
