Pensions settlement applauded

Some 130,000 people who lost all or part of their pensions when their companies went bust will receive broadly the same level of compensation as workers protected by the Pension Protection Fund, ministers announced yesterday.

The move was widely welcomed by trades unions and campaigners and appears finally to settle a dispute between the government and the pensioners, who have been backed by the parliamentary ombudsman, backbench MPs and the courts.
