There are few greener modes of travel than a boat under canvas. Harnessing the wind produces enough energy to haul vast and heavy vessels across the seas and even a trip in a light pleasure craft recalls the age when sail ruled the world’s trade routes without a whiff of greenhouse gas emissions.

Little wonder then that Dame Ellen MacArthur, one of the world’s most celebrated sailors, is now a champion of the green cause.
