Gordon Brown on Wednesday strongly denied equipment shortages were costing soldiers’ lives in Afghanistan as he prepared for a highly critical report on Britain’s military helicopter fleet.

The Commons defence select committee will publish what is expected to be a scathing investigation on Thursday into helicopter capabilities, casting doubts on the adequacy of support for troops in Afghanistan.
