DPJ seeks role for ousted party chief

Ichiro Ozawa, the scandal-hit former president of the Democratic party of Japan, should continue to play a “major role” in the opposition group’s leadership, said his former deputy and possible successor on Thursday.

The DPJ will in the next few months contest a general election against a long-ruling Liberal Democratic party, which – while weakened by scandals, gaffes and policy setbacks – has enjoyed a rebound recently.
