Forget The X Factor. Sit out Strictly Come Dancing. If “reality TV” is your thing, head for BBC2 and the joys of Masterchef: The Professionals, which is steadily building towards a thrilling conclusion.

Ambitious young chefs – almost all male, incidentally – are competing for the right to call themselves the nation’s greatest emerging culinary talent. Their work is being judged by the blokey Gregg Wallace, a fruit and veg expert, and Michel Roux Jnr, son of Albert Roux of Gavroche fame and a renowned chef in his own right. We are now getting down to the final few episodes, with the strongest remaining candidates doing all they can to impress.
