Questions over Karzai’s legitimacy remain

A second-round in Afghanistan’s presidential election was always a ballot too far.

So Monday’s decision by the Independent Election Commission to call off Saturday’s poll and declare Hamid Karzai the winner, handing him a second term as president, was met with as much relief as anything else by the international community and many Afghans.
