Mahmoud Abbas said on Thursday he would not seek re-election as president of the Palestinian Authority next January, in a sign of the mounting frustration felt by the veteran leader over the lack of progress in the peace process.

In a televised speech on Thursday night that criticised the current Israeli government and hinted at disappointment with the US administration, Mr Abbas said: “I have no desire to run in the forthcoming elections.”
