Stalls set out in speaker contest

Ten MPs on Monday made their pitch to be Commons speaker in a hustings dominated by pledges to protect backbench interests and reform prime minister’s questions, the most popular occasion in the parliamentary week.

Speaking in the first public campaign event for speaker ever held, the hopefuls clashed over issues ranging from “boorish” and “sexist” parliamentary debate to the length of MPs’ summer holidays and the lack of a Commons crèche.
