Pragmatist enters ‘food versus fuel’ debate

Barack Obama’s choice on Wednesday of Tom Vilsack as the next US agriculture secretary is likely to bring a pragmatic approach to the “food versus fuel” debate.

As the former governor of Iowa, one of the top corn-growing states, Mr Vilsack is a longtime supporter of corn-based ethanol production as a way to support rural economies and reduce dependence on foreign oil.
