In the city: Best option is to clean and re-use waste

At the turn of the millennium, United Nations member states set a goal of ensuring clean water for half of the 1.1bn people worldwide without it, and halving the number of people – some 2.4bn – without proper sanitation.

Allowing for the expected growth in population, most of it in cities, that implied providing clean water to 1.5bn people, and basic sanitation to 2bn, by 2015.
