Fed move address fears of funds strain

The dramatic step-up in the Federal Reserve’s liquidity support operations reflects growing concern about the deterioration in financial markets since its last policy meeting at the end of January.

Fed officials see multiple signs of renewed strain in funding markets – including widening spreads in the interbank money market, fresh pressures in the asset-backed commercial paper market, and dislocations in areas such as the auction rate securities market, used to raise funds by many towns and cities.
