Blair relents on terrorism bill

Tony Blair's emergency anti- terror powers finally became law on Friday night after an extraordinary constitutional showdown forced him to give parliament the right to alter or tear up the legislation in just over a year's time.

At the end of a dramatic week in Westminster, in which MPs and peers had wrangled day and night for 32 hours, the prime minister caved in to opposition demands by offering a new bill next spring.
