UK develops camera shyness in Brussels

Britain has astonished its European Union partners by having second thoughts about opening up EU lawmaking to more public scrutiny.

Margaret Beckett, UK foreign secretary, has ordered a review of London’s normally outspoken support for transparency, ahead of next week’s EU summit in Brussels. Mrs Beckett claims to have painful personal experience of how EU deals can be wrecked if cameras are allowed into meetings, and ministers begin playing to national audiences.
