Centrica, the owner of British Gas, denied that it was close to a deal with Gazprom, the Russian gas group, but confirmed yesterday that the two were in talks on long-term supply contracts.

Gazprom currently supplies about 2 per cent of the UK's gas via continental gas pipelines but has ambitions to increase this to nearer 20 per cent in the coming years.
