Emerson Electric, the US engineering group, has called off a takeover approach for the Chloride Group after its smaller British rival rejected a second indicative offer that valued the company at £703m ($1.4bn).

A deal would have brought together two of the world’s biggest suppliers of uninterrupted power systems.
