Labour revolt fails to block ID cards

Rebel Labour backbenchers last night cut Tony Blair's majority to just 32 as they joined opposition parties in voting against his plans to introduce identity cards.

An attempt by Neil Gerrard, MP for Walthamstow, to strip out clauses making carrying cards compulsory, was beaten by 310 votes to 278 after a bitter debate in which backbenchers warned of "creeping compulsion".
