Basic wage idea gains momentum in Germany

The front in Angela Merkel's party that is opposed to a universal minimum wage for Germany is eroding after the Christian Democratic Union's pro-business wing endorsed the proposal, albeit with stringent conditions.

Erwin Lamberts, spokesman for the CDU's "economic council", the party's most virulent opponents of statutory minimum pay,said the council "would support it but only as part of a -package".
