Officials defend Birmingham evacuation

Politicians and police have defended the decision to evacuate the centre of Birmingham on Saturday night in response to fears of a terrorist attack.

Around 20,000 people left the bars, restaurants and night-clubs of Broad Street and the Chinese Quarter through streets congested with traffic after the police received “specific information” warning of danger.
