Brown ‘peddling an illusion’ with asset sale

Gordon Brown’s plans for a £16bn asset sale programme were ridiculed by opposition MPs on Monday, as they pointed out that most of the sales consisted of voluntary disposals by councils.

Not only would there be no compulsion on local authorities to sell their targeted £11bn of assets – including business parks, offices, houses and regional airports – but they would also be able to keep the proceeds.
