The casual observer could easily be forgiven for confusing parts of the Spanish Mediterranean coast with North Africa. The land is arid and cracked and in places resembles the Sahara desert. But this harsh coastline has become increasingly littered with outbursts of green.

This is because developers have been pumping water into the booming golf course market and the perfectly landscaped gardens at hundreds of beachfront hotels.
