Unresolved issues cloud uneasy calm that has fallen over Gaza

The truce that gave Gaza its first day of calm on Sunday after a 22-day offensive remains fragile at best.

The two sides still remain apart on many crucial issues. Addressing them will be complicated by Israel’s insistence that it will not strike any agreement with Hamas, lest it enhance the group’s prestige and legitimacy. What is more, with Israeli troops and tanks set to stay inside Gaza, the chances of a flare-up remain high. But the two ceasefire declarations do give both sides – and the international community which went into frenzied diplomatic action on Sunday – some time to consolidate the truce.
