Darling and King square up for clash

Alistair Darling is set for a bruising clash with Mervyn King, Bank of England governor, over his insistence that the Bank’s new deputy governor should have a strong City background.

The chancellor is determined to beef up the Bank’s financial stability role after the Northern Rock crisis and wants a deputy governor able to regain the confidence of London’s banking sector.
