‘Maverick’ aims for unifying message

John McCain would be forgiven a pang of jealousy over the Republican party’s overnight infatuation with Sarah Palin.

It has taken him more than 25 years to be fully embraced by the party faithful and even now it seems more a marriage of convenience than a true romance.
