Powell backs Obama for President

Barack Obama won the backing of a senior Republican elder stateman on Sunday when Colin Powell, former Bush administration secretary of state, announced he would vote for the Democratic candidate on November 4.

The former general criticised the narrow approach of John McCain’s Republican campaign and said Mr Obama was the more inclusive candidate. He also attacked Mr McCain’s choice of Sarah Palin as his running mate and said she was not ready to step in as president if needed.
