Pope hopes to hold back tide of change in Spain

Like generals marshalling their troops into battle, Spanish bishops expect more than 1.5m faithful to gather in Valencia this weekend to hear Pope Benedict XVI defend holy matrimony – of the strict, heterosexual kind – and the family.

Although it is described as a pastoral visit, the political undercurrents of Pope Benedict’s trip are hard to miss.
