Sun makes Solaris freely available

Sun Microsystems on Tuesday followed through on its long-standing pledge to make the source code of its proprietary Solaris operating system freely available to software developers.

The struggling US computer systems maker hopes the move will generate interest in Solaris, a highly regarded operating system that has quickly lost ground to Linux, the open-source operating system that runs on cheap industry-standard servers.
