Wall Street joins global sell-off

Equities plunged on Friday after a dramatic late sell-off in New York extended the sustained losing streak on world stock markets.

Shortly after the open, the Dow Jones Industrial Average passed yet another grim milestone, diving as much as 8.1 per cent to fall below 8,000. Yet by mid-morning in New York leading indices were off their worst levels, having briefly moved into positive territory during another highly volatile session.
