Grassroots Tories see red over Cameron's environmental 'zealotry'

David Cameron's plans for higher aviation taxes risk alienating his core Tory vote and reducing his poll lead, grassroots activists warned yesterday.

Conservative blogs rang alarm bells at the prospect of a Tory leader endorsing higher taxes - albeit offset by tax cuts elsewhere - and increased regulation. Websites cited the largely hostile reaction of the right-of-centre press to the Tory proposals, highlighting headlines such as "pie in the sky".
