City is fast catching up with Wall Street

When Merrill Lynch reported its full-year results this week Stan O'Neal, chief executive, hailed 2006 as the "most successful year" in the New York-based investment bank's history.

However, the sharp rise in profits owed less to business conducted on Wall Street than to the rapid expansion of the bank's operations outside the US.
