Europe's parliament strives to keep points lead in sparring with Barroso

The stand-off between the European parliament and José Manuel Barroso over his team of commissioners - expected to end today when parliamentarians approve a reworked line-up - signalled the coming of age of the Strasbourg assembly.

Parliament's ability this past month to flex its muscles and force the incoming Commission president to change his team was a high point for an assembly that has long been seen as the weak link in the European Union's power structure.
