Australia apologises to ‘forgotten’ children

Australia’s government has formally apologised for the neglect and abuse suffered by tens of thousands of children placed in orphanages and institutions up until the late 1970s.

In an emotional speech at Parliament House, Kevin Rudd, the prime minister, said the systematic abuse of children had been an “ugly chapter” that must never be repeated.
