Singapore Telecommunications, south-east Asia's largest telecoms operator, said yesterday it was considering expanding into Africa as it seeks new business in emerging markets to offset slow growth in its domestic market and in Australia.

The company's Africa push comes two months after plans by its Indian partner Bharti Airtel to merge with MTN, South Africa's biggest mobile company, broke down because Pretoria refused to approve the deal.
