Monsanto agrees to $1.5m crop bribe penalty

Monsanto, the agrochemical company, is to pay $1.5m in penalties to the US government to settle charges of bribing a senior Indonesian official in an attempt to lift controls on new genetically modified crops.

The case, brought by the Justice Department (DoJ) under anti-bribery laws, highlights the continuing political struggle in developing countries over efforts by Monsanto and other big companies to win acceptance for genetically modified crops.
