Zurich Financial Services said it would spend up to €900m ($1.43bn) to become the second biggest insurer in Spain through a partnership with Banco Sabadell, a leading bank.

The move, following this week’s decision not to bid for the insurance activities of Royal Bank of Scotland, boosted ZFS shares, which strongly outperformed a falling market.
