US ahead as global R&D spending up 10%

Growth in spending on research and development by the world’s largest companies accelerated last year, according to the 2007 R&D Scoreboard published on Monday by the UK government.

Britain’s Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills said the 1,250 top companies around the world invested £243.9bn ($510bn, €348bn) in R&D in 2006. This was an increase of 10 per cent over 2005, when spending had risen 7 per cent.
