President George W. Bush missed some of the final day of the G8 summit in Germany on Friday because of illness. The White House said he was suffering from a stomach ailment but that it was not serious and he was expected to rejoin the summit later.

A much-anticipated meeting with new French president Nicolas Sarkozy - their first one-on-one encounter - went ahead in Mr Bush’s private quarters.
