Homeserve, the domestic maintenance group, has purchased SFG, a French appliance warranty provider, in a further sign of its shift away from the emergency services business it decided to withdraw from last week.

The company, which sells insurance-style coverage of home utilities and appliances, will spend £24m buying SFG from April, the French insurance group. The price includes SFG's £6.9m in cash balances.
